National Trust Swarm

Posted on May 24, 2019 by jen3972

Continuing with the feral bee theme, Paul had put up bait hives in Market Wood in the hope of enticing a swarm from one of the nearby oak tree colonies. Sure enough, there was lots of activity and bringing in of pollen when he checked after a week or so. https://videopress.com/v/2gTKVSni We decided that these … Continue reading National Trust Swarm →

Knockhatch Swarm

Posted on May 22, 2019 by jen3972

The oak tree bees were very busy when we last visited Knockhatch Adventure Park, and according to the staff, the bees had swarmed on Wednesday 15th, but nobody had seen where they went. We checked our bait boxes: the one nearest the colony had bees! We weren't sure whether they were the swarm from the … Continue reading Knockhatch Swarm →

Tree Bees at Knockhatch

Posted on May 9, 2019 by jen3972

Last year, Paul was tipped off about some bees in an aged oak at Knockhatch Adventure Park and yesterday we went to see them, and hear about their history from Colin, the Managing Director of the family-owned Park. The colony currently resides in the trunk of the tree, but originally they were in a branch … Continue reading Tree Bees at Knockhatch →

I had a fantastic afternoon at Tablehurst Farm yesterday, learning about their small-but-perfectly-formed raw milk cow-calf dairy. Jersey cows 😭 Oh. My. Word. 😍🥰☺️ Back during my farming days I worked at a micro-dairy where we hand-milked the cows, but these are machine-milked, albeit one at a time, and with their calf suckling alongside. Ethical milk at its absolute very best ☺️ blogpost here: wayward-bee.com @tablehurst.farm #biodynamic #tablehurstfarm #rawmilk #smalldairy #cowcalfdairy #ethicalfarming #innovation #buythebest #qualitynotquantity #eastsussex #sussexblogger #wordpressblog #jerseycow #cowandcalf #smallfarm #realfood #slowfood
The chickens pecking at their food bowl always reminds me of the toy I had as a child which, according to the internet, is still available! 😆 if you’d told little 6 year old me that one day I’d have my very own pecking chickens, I would have cried with longing ☺️ #lovemychooks #chickenkeeper #backyardhens #smallholderlife #lightsussex #rooster #chooks #freerangehens #fresheggs #peck #breakfasttime #frostymorning #eastsussex
Popped down to check on the Thermosolar bees 🐝🌞 blogpost up at wayward-bee.com 😊 #solarbeeproject #thermosolarhive #innovation #varroa #blogpost #berwick #solarfarm #solarpanels #beekeeperlife #sustainablebeekeeping #eastsussex #sussexblogger
This hen has been taking advantage of her moulty coopmates and started feather pecking 🤨 chickens have unfortunate cannibalistic tendencies and are drawn to blood, so offenders have to be isolated so that they break the habit and give the peckees a chance to regain some confidence; often they won’t come out of the house to eat as they’re too scared. I let her range with her friends as they’re distracted by foraging and can find their own space, and she’s back in with them at night 🙂 #smallholderlife #chickenkeeping #wyandotte #feather_perfection #naughtyhen #freerangechickens #eastsussex #countryliving #farmlife #coldfeet
This is what we want to see after the copious rainfall of the last few weeks 😃🐝 there are a few things still flowering but just seeing the foragers out surveying their territory and communing with their environs is a comfort at this time of year. Plants send out signals to insects, and I guess there must be a way for the bees to gauge the flowering plants’ status and adjust their winter stores usage accordingly #winterbees #sustainablebeekeeping #symbiosis #talkingtrees #honeybee #naturalbehaviour #beehive #eastsussex
